The future and impact of Amtrak
A news roundtable— Wednesday, June 4, 2003

With a hearing scheduled for June 5, Congress is preparing to take action that will determine the future of U.S. passenger rail service. On June 4, the Economic Policy Institute is convening a news roundtable of experts, policy makers, and rail advocates for a focused, current look at proposals to privatize Amtrak and the potential impact of such a policy change.

Leading the discussion will be two nationally recognized experts on trains and transportation:

  • Elliott D. Sclar, Professor of Urban Planning and Public Affairs at Columbia University, will discuss his new study, Amtrak Privatization: The Route to Failure, published by the Economic Policy Institute.

  • Vukan R. Vuchic, UPS Foundation Professor of Transportation Engineering and Professor of Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, will address how transportation policies affect the urban economy, social fabric, and environment.
